Dalla sua fondazione, il Dipartimento si è sempre dedicato alla cura delle donne, dei neonati, dei bambini e dei ragazzi, riunendo in sé competenze sanitarie e di ricerca che gli hanno permesso di diventare oggi una realtà di eccellenza a livello nazionale e internazionale.

Le sue finalità istituzionali sono la cura e il benessere dei pazienti, l’assistenza clinica integrata con la didattica, la ricerca scientifica nonché l’erogazione delle attività formative necessarie al trasferimento delle competenze pediatriche e ostetrico-ginecologiche a studenti, specializzandi e operatori.

La missione del Dipartimento di Salute della Donna e del Bambino - SDB è realizzare il miglior programma accademico, clinico e chirurgico a livello nazionale ed internazionale. È questo il nucleo essenziale che dà senso motivazione a un team di professionisti e operatori determinato e

orientato a operare in maniera integrata e multidisciplinare, volto a conseguire risultati efficaci e a garantire un’esperienza positiva per chi si trova ad affrontare la malattia propria o del proprio figlio.

The Department believes that

  • effective prevention, diagnosis and treatment of disease depends on strong partnerships with referring physicians,
  • close communication with each physician at every stage of the treatment program provides integrated care and enhances patient's care,
  • we need to be a partner in treatment to provide both patient and physician with hope,
  • there is a need for an active disease patient support program aimed at meeting the emotional and spiritual needs of its patients.

The Department of Paediatrics mission is to have the best academic/ clinical/ surgical program in the country with influence at an International level as well. The basis of the best program is the best patient care. Success will also be required in research, teaching, and leadership on local, provincial, national, and international levels.

Overall success will require a continued focus on the patient by

  • Defining optimal treatment approach
  • Producing the best plan and employing the best technique
  • Providing a healing experience for the patient
  • Performing meticulous assessment of outcomes
  • Identifying and developing new, more efficacious treatment approaches
  • Studying the long term effects of diagnosis and treatment in survivors thus allowing for a better understanding of the pathogenesis and etiology of disease through genetic epidemiology and collaboration with molecular biologists.

To achieve this mission, excellence must be maintained and progress must be seen in the following key areas

This application of science to medicine is enhanced by interdisciplinary collaboration, fiscal responsibility, advancement of social and intellectual diversity, commitment to self-learning, and a professionalism dedicated to teamwork and collegiality. These values promote the best interests of medicine as a whole and further strengthen social contract with the community we serve.

Thus, we believe that on a local level the Department of Pediatrics needs to be an integral part of the daily life of the community. The Department of Pediatrics in general must inspire interest in the prevention of disease and the promotion of human health, cultivate biomedical discovery, educate tomorrow's leaders, and provide compassionate care while translating new knowledge into meaningful improvements in health outcome. It needs to be a shining example to the community as to how collaboration, professionalism, expertise and care work together of which the community is proud of. 

With commitment to excellence, services shall be distinguished by the ability to provide rapid results without loss of quality. Through skilled technical staff, researchers, surgeons, and clinicians, as well as modern laboratory and hospital facilities, the Department of Paediatrics shall be able to achieve its ultimate purpose of providing thorough, state-of-the-art diagnostic, surgical and clinical services. The importance of human resources cannot be forgotten. They are the backbone of the structure. The satisfaction of the individuals (technical staff, medical staff, nursing staff, administration, researchers) can be seen in the long related to within the Department of Pediatrics.

The Department believes that "success" when treating children involves various aspects that include not only cure, but also normal subsequent development and a future productive life.  We takes pride in the fact that from the beginning, the Department institution has remained true to the adage that "Cure is not enough."

The mission of any paediatric program headed by me must be to provide comprehensive, compassionate patient care of the highest quality, incorporating innovative and multidisciplinary research and education. Each group within the organization (surgery, clinical, laboratory, research, teaching, etc) have a common goals in the various specialties to obtain the best cooperation
